In which Mivelly and Fabio discern how to retrieve the wagon from the bumblejackets.
The fizzling buzz buzzing grew louder and angrier with every second.
"Run!" Mivelly screamed, as he jumped out of the wagon and sprinted for cover behind an old, nearby stump.
"We should be safe here." He panted.
There was no reply. Mivelly looked beside him. There was no Fabio. He peeked around the stump. There on the wagon, Fabio sat trembling, his eyes larger than Mivelly had ever seen a hedgehogs eyes get before. Little streams of tears rolled steadily down his cheeks.
"FABIO RUN!!!" Mivelly shouted with all his might.
It was as if Fabio could not hear him.
"RUN!!!" Mivelly shouted again.
Fabio stayed glued to his place with terror. Mivelly knew he had to do something. He sprinted from behind the stump, back to the wagon where he shouted,
"Get off the wagon and run!"
Fabio looked at him.
"I- I- I- I-..." He stuttered.
"Take my hand!" Mivelly urged.
Fabio reached out and grasped Mivelly's hand so tightly that he nearly shouted in pain!
"Get out of the wagon!" Mivelly commanded.
The trembling hedgehog obeyed, and not a moment too soon. Just as Fabio stepped out of the wagon a cloud of bumblejackets burst forth from the ground!
"RUN!!!" Mivelly screamed.
The two friends tore off for the stump as fast as their legs could take them. That is, as fast as Fabio's legs could take them. You see, once Mivelly had broken him out of his terrified trance, survival mode kicked in hard. Fabio sprinted faster than any hedgehog had ever moved since the invention of sliced bread, dragging Mivelly along behind him.
The bumblejackets, assuming the wagon was the sole intruder, began attacking it instantly, which afforded Mivelly and Fabio the chance they needed to escape un-stung. Fabio plopped down onto the ground, and braced one hand against the stump. His eyes were still as wide as walnuts and his heart thumped in rapid palpitations.
"That was close." Mivelly puffed, gasping for air.
"Yeah." Fabio replied. "I was almost a goner!"
The bumblejackets droned ominously in the distance. Mivelly and Fabio watched as they covered every inch of the wagon in a frenetic flurry of wings and stingers.
"How are we gonna get the wagon back now?" Mivelly squeaked.
"I don't know." Fabio mumbled, looking down at his toes. "Maybe we should just wait for the bumblejackets to go away."
"I guess so." Mivelly mused. "But what if they don't?"
"Then we'll have to come up with another plan." Fabio said.
The two friends sat down behind the stump and waited. The bumblejackets circled the wagon like guards outside a castle. Time seemed to drag on and on and on.

"This is taking forever." Fabio yawned. "I wish they'd just go back underground where they came from."
"Maybe if we distract them, they'll leave the wagon alone long enough for us to get it back." Mivelly said.
"But how?" Fabio asked.
"Hmmmm. I don't know yet." Mivelly replied. "What do bumblejackets like?"
"Flowers." Fabio said. "Everybody knows that."
"That's it!" Mivelly exclaimed. "We could pick flowers and lure the bumblejackets away from the wagon!"
"Yeah..." Fabio said, his voice betraying his severe lack of enthusiasm. "That might work, but Maybe we should just wait a little longer."
"Let's go find some flowers and then see if the bumblejackets have gone away by the time we get back." Mivelly said.
"Yeah, I guess we could do that." Fabio nodded. "I know where a bunch of asters are growing. It's not very far from here."
With this, Fabio jumped up and scuttled away as fast as his paws could carry him. The more distance he could put between himself and the bumblejackets, the better. He intended to waste no time in this endeavor.
Mivelly, following along, couldn't help but notice as they passed several patches of asters and golden rod. Finally, as they passed yet another patch of flowers, Mivelly shouted,
"Fabio, stop!"
Fabio came to a halt, and turned around.
"What's the matter?" He asked.
"We've passed four patches of flowers already! Where are you going?"
A sheepish little look crossed Fabio's face and he looked down at his toes. Wringing his hands he blurted out,
"I was looking for a patch that didn't have any bumblejackets in it."
"That's not going to happen, Fabio." Mivelly said. "Bumblejackets like flowers, of course they're going to be where the flowers are."
"I know." Fabio mumbled.
"Look, the bumblejackets won't bother us in the fields. They only got angry when we disturbed their nest." Mivelly said. "We'll be fine picking flowers."
"I know." Fabio whispered as he trembled a little. "I'm still scared of them."
"Stick close to me." Mivelly said, heading toward the nearest patch of wildflowers. "We'll be fine."
Fabio followed Mivelly cautiously. Eyeing the bumblejackets that were buzzing to and fro between the flowers. Mivelly picked a few asters, and handed them to Fabio.
"You hold the flowers, and I'll pick them."
Fabio nodded and took the blue blossoms from Mivelly, who proceeded to pluck several golden rod stalks, and then a few more asters. Handing these to Fabio he pointed to a vibrant bunch of blooms on the other side of the patch and said,
"Let's go get those."

A bumblejacket buzzed over and landed on the bunch of asters Fabio was holding. Stopping in his tracks, he began to tremble.
"M- Mi- Miv- Mi- Mivelly..." he stuttered, his eyes focused intently on the bumblejacket that was crawling round the bouquet in his hands. "I need he- hel- help."
Mivelly stopped and turned around. The bumblejacket buzzed from the flowers to Fabio's ear. His lip began to quiver and his eyes widened to their previous walnut size.
"Stay calm, Fabio." Mivelly said. "If it was going to sting you it would have done it already."
"Re- Really?" Fabio stuttered.
"Really." Mivelly said. "Just breath."
Fabio only continued to hold his breath. The bumblejacket crawled down his face and sat on his nose, staring back into his big, watering eyes.
"See, they're not so bad." Mivelly said.
"I don't know about that." Fabio whispered. "It's tickling my nose with it's feet."
Mivelly giggle at this report. Fabio smiled a bit too, and began to breath a little easier. The bumblejacket turned itself around on his nose, the tickles from it's tiny feet making it so very difficult for Fabio to hold still. ACHOO!!! Fabio sneezed with the force of a hedgehog hurricane.
The bumblejacket flew up, circled Fabio's head, and then landed between his eyes. Fabio stopped smiling and went cross eyed as he attempted to watch it. Between the bumblejackets tickling feet, and having a temperamental, stinger laden insect on his face, Fabio didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Mivelly, on the other hand, looking at the cross eyed hedgehog, burst into uncontrolled laughter.
"What's so funny?!" Fabio demanded.
"You... you... you look like... a tadpole!" Mivelly wheezed.
"I'd rather have a tadpole on my face right now." Fabio muttered.
The bumblejacket, finally satisfied with it's conclusion that Fabio was not in fact a flower, buzzed away to find a more suitable source of nectar. Fabio let out an epic sigh of relief and scuttled over beside Mivelly.
"How many flowers do you think we need?" He asked.
"I don't know." Mivelly replied. "Maybe a couple dozen."
As they continued to pick flowers, Fabio began to feel more comfortable in spite of the bumblejackets, and even started to enjoy himself. After a while, Mivelly and Fabio headed back toward the wagon both carrying as many flowers as each could hold. The trek back to the stump seemed a lot farther than the walk away from it had, and Fabio huffed and puffed most of the way back.
"So what's the plan?" He asked, peering out at the wagon that was still surrounded by bumblejackets, though there were less than there had been before.
"One of us has to lead the bumblejackets away, and the other one has to grab the wagon." Mivelly said. "Which one do you want to do?"
Fabio looked down at his feet.
"I- I don't know." He mumbled. "I'd rather not do either of them."

"Then how am I supposed to get my wagon back?!" Mivelly squeaked indignantly. "I can't do this by myself, and besides, we rode the wagon down the hill for you!"
"I know." Fabio sighed.
He thought about his options for a minute, figured that being farther away from the nest was the best option, and said,
"I'll lead them away with the flowers. You can get the wagon."
"Deal." Mivelly said. "I think the more flowers you can carry the better. You'd better take mine with you too."
"My hands are already full!" Fabio protested. "What am I supposed to do, stick yours to my prickles?!"
"Yeah!" Mivelly exclaimed. "That's a great idea!"
"I Should have just kept my mouth shut." Fabio grumbled, as Mivelly carefully stuck the asters and goldenrod blossoms all over his back.
"If I was a bumblejacket, I'd definitely follow you." Mivelly said with confidence.
"That's not very comforting." Fabio said.
"Relax," Mivelly laughed, "they'll be following you for the flowers. Besides, I'm pretty sure flowers make them happy, and I'm pretty sure happy bumblejackets don't sting."
"I wish you were absolutely sure of that." Fabio moped. "I don't like being a bumblejacket diversion."
"You said you wanted to do this part." Mivelly reminded him.
"No," Fabio replied, "I said I would do it. Not that I wanted to."
"Fair enough." Mivelly said, fastening the last flower to Fabio's prickles. "You're good to go."
Fabio peeked around the stump again. The bumblejackets buzzed round and round the wagon still humming their ominous drone. Fabio took a deep breath, summoned all the courage his little hedgehog heart could muster, and stepped forth to face the bumblejackets.
"You've got this!" Mivelly called out as Fabio made his way back to the wagon.
"Thanks." Fabio wanted to say.
But he couldn't bring himself to make even the smallest noise. He had one mission, and he must focus everything he had into completing it. As he drew near the wagon, the bumblejackets took notice of the intruder.
"I'm just a bunch of flowers. I'm just a bunch of flowers." Fabio said to himself as he neared the hoard of stripes and stingers. "Bumblejackets like flowers. Flowers make bumblejackets happy." He muttered. "Happy bumblejackets don't sting."
Now, Fabio was near enough to the wagon that several of the bumblejackets buzzed over to inspect the walking bouquet. Having attracted their attention, he turned and headed away from the wagon. A few of the bumblejackets followed him, then a few more followed them.
"It's working!" Fabio thought. "The flowers are actually working!"
The flowers were not working. Bumblejackets are not forgiving creatures, and after having had their nest run over, they were neither in the mood for flowers, nor visitors.
